House McNeill

HOME

Renovation / 3 bedroom house

DURATION:

2015 - 2016

LOCATION

Muizenberg - Western Cape

Our clients bought a home in the seaside suburb of Muizenberg, Cape Town. The home required plenty of work - from repositioning and repurposing the spaces, to restoring the light and views which were obstructed by an old covered patio.

The home was redesigned so that the passage divides the home into the public and private spaces, becoming the main access route and also the threshold between these two areas. A window at the end of the passageway guides the eye into the garden and onto the mountain, showing a glimmer of what lies at the end.

The old covered patio was removed to allow for plenty of natural sunlight to enter the home and mountain views from the newly positioned kitchen. The kitchen spills out onto the stoep and garden and connects to the scullery which was previously a storeroom.

We contrasted old and new walls by painting the old plastered walls white and used dark painted exposed brick walls to indicate the new. The material palette consisted of the use of natural materials, such as wood, concrete and slate.
