Die Kunshuis

PROJECT NAME

Kunshuis

DURATION:

2020 - 2021

LOCATION

Riebeek kasteel - Western Cape

FEATURE

VISI Issue 121

Our clients own a notable collection of South African Art. It was their dream to build a home in which they could display their art, and share it on occasion, with the public. Our brief was to design a live-in art gallery in the quaint  ‘dorpie’ of Riebeek Kasteel. The town has a thriving art community, and hosts the annual Solo Studios Art Festival.

The Duality

The building comes across as monolithic, fort-like when the screens are closed. However, it still provokes interest by showing glimpses of the beautiful pieces inside. When the screens slide open, it gives the feeling of a flower blooming as it transforms into something contrary. A space that is open and approachable. There is a strong visual connection between the street and the living room, which extends an invitation to passers-by when exhibitions or viewings of the space take place.

In 2022, Kunshuis was opened to the public for the first time at the Solo Studios Art Festival and has been a part of the roster ever since, and will continue to be in years to come.
